Following up with my Music Spotlight artists is one of my favorite things to do. It is fascinating to see what has transpired since the last interview.
Because Ashley Anne got started in the music industry at such a young age, she was (and still is) in the process of discovering who she really is and what is most important to her. Written at age 17, her song "dear dolly" has had more than 3 million streams. Now, at just 22 years of age, Anne has released her 3rd EP, Generational Heartbreak, and the progression in her music, and especially her songwriting, is evident.
And while my original article highlighted her giftedness, especially when it comes to songwriting, at that point, she was not ready to share aspects of her childhood trauma.
She explained, "The whole theme of [Generational Heartbreak] is figuring out where you come from and why you are the way you are now."
She stated in her press release: “I moved to Nashville four years ago, thinking I would leave all my childhood trauma in Virginia Beach. About a year in, I realized I carry a lot of that with me in all aspects of my life. I've worked on healing and coming to terms with much of it, but I think it will always be a part of me— and that's okay. It has made me who I am, and there is fruit in that. This project is a musical product of my growing up and its impact on my adult relationships. I hope it feels like a warm hug and a shoulder to lean on. I hope you are transported through song into a world where we are so much more than just our generational heartbreak.”
The first song released off Generational Heartbreak was "love looks like" which earned the cover of Spotify's Fresh Finds Country playlist and was later named a Fresh Finds Favorite.
She stated, "My parents got divorced when I was in third grade, so I don't remember them being love. I just remember lots of fighting. What happens during your developing years is so crucial to how you'll be as an adult. Adults think, 'They're just children, they don't understand.' But we very much do understand. Then you become an adult and start to dip your toes into relationships, falling in love with somebody can get pretty scary." But Anne broke the chain of generational heartbreak with "love looks like."
For some, the song "found you broken" could be about a partner, but for Anne, it's about a friend. She shared, "We all are meant to find people, whether it's best friends or whether we find that in sisters or siblings, brothers, or whoever, I think that having those people in your life who have experienced things as well makes us feel less alone." And sharing these thoughts in a song makes those who hear it feel less alone.
Anne's song, "happy birthday" hits the emotions we have all felt at some point. It's about when it's somebody's birthday, and that person is no longer in your life. You have all the memories, but aren't even able to wish them 'happy birthday' anymore.
Right after Anne turned 21, she was at a dinner where Laci Kaye Booth sat next to her. Booth ordered a Paloma cocktail. She said, "Try my drink," and it was bitter and sour, not to Anne's liking. She thought, "Oh, to be the girl who orders the drier cocktail, mature, in her late 20s, with more acquired taste buds. I wrote 'paloma' about the girl I aspire to be."
As life goes, we all must change, often moving and leaving behind our comfort zone and old friends. You don't even know if your old friends even want to hear from you anymore. On top of that, you are in the process of making new friends. She advised, "When I played 'phone a friend' at my shows, I realized these little girls in the audience were relating to the song as much as the moms did. This feeling is not targeted at a certain age. It's in everybody's life."
It is unusual for a country record or EP not to be mostly about a boy or girl falling in love or breaking up, so Generational Heartbreak is unique in that respect. But the last song on the EP, "nevermind" is about a breakup. Anne comes to the realization that the relationship is over in the cleverly written song with the words Thought we would spend the rest of our lives/ Never mind/ You were never mine.
But instead of "nevermind" being labeled as a sad song, it is turned into an anthem of sorts with several tempo changes as she asks, "How could I have been so blind? When you said 'forever,' you lied." By the end of the song, you are thrilled that they are no longer together.
With Generational Heartbreak, it is evident that Anne's songwriting has evolved, especially in Nashville, as she often writes with others. But she is adamant about not losing herself in the process.
"If I'm writing for me, I think I'm always super vocal about what I would and wouldn't say and the point that I'm trying to get across and whether I think something makes sense or not. That's why my music is so cohesive because I think you can tell that it's me all over these songs," Anne stated.
She continued, "The cool part of songwriting is like writing a song from a specific experience at a specific time or season in your life and then realizing that that feeling you know will ebb and flow. It'll come and go as you proceed through your journey."
And if you are gifted enough to write and sing about a specific time and season of your life, you can be sure someone else is going through something similar. Music makes you feel seen and less alone.
Anne continues to do solo writing as she did when she was younger, in addition to her cowriting.
Recognized as an Artist to Watch in 2026 by 1883 Magazine and Galore, and previously featured by Holler, Sweety High, Women of Country, and Spotify's Fresh Finds Class of 2024, Anne has earned both critical praise and a devoted audience. She has shared stages with Avery Anna, Charles Wesley Godwin, Tigirlily Gold, and Josh Turner, played CMA Fest in 2024 and 2025, appeared at Spotify House, and completed a 12-city run opening for Maddox Batson. She is currently on the road supporting Avery Anna and Max McNown on select dates and will open for Zack Top at Scope Arena near her hometown in Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday, May 22, 2026.
Though Generational Heartbreak is her 3rd EP, Ashley Anne, at 22, is just getting started. I am excited to watch this young artist's star rise.
