19 Days of Activism: How Murfreesboro police help fight impact of opioids and substance abuse on children

During 19 Days of Activism, the Murfreesboro Police Department partners with Child Advocacy Center of Rutherford and Cannon Counties other agencies for the prevention of abuse and violence toward children.

This year's focus is the impact of opioids and substance abuse on children.

The Murfreesboro Police Department has seen a dramatic increase in the number of opioid-related calls for service. These calls not only include an increase in opioid-related overdoses but in criminal investigations related to drug abuse.

Police agencies across the country are equipping police officers with Narcan for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdoses. Children often struggle physically, emotionally, socially or lack adequate care when parents or caretakers struggle with substance abuse.

"Through our partnership with the Child Advocacy Center and other agencies, we can continue to provide education to our community about child abuse while focusing on the impact of opioids and substance abuse on children," said Amy Norville, MPD spokeswoman. "By combining resources and providing training, including alcohol and drug education, relapse prevention, anger management, parenting and communication skills. and stress management, we can teach families how to cope with addiction issues."
