Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced Wednesday, Jan. 13 appointments to judicial positions across the state, including one for the court that covers Rutherford and Cannon counties.

"I am proud to announce the appointment of these highly qualified individuals, and I value the experience they will bring to their respective judicial districts," Lee said. "I’m confident they will serve Tennessee with integrity."

For the 16th Judicial District, Lee selected James "Jimmy" Turner. Turner is a private practice attorney for Oliver & Turner in Murfreesboro. He also serves as the city attorney for Eagleville. In private practice, Turner focuses on criminal defense. He earned his J.D. from Nashville School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Turner will fill the Honorable David Bragg’s vacancy, effective immediately.

The Trial Court Vacancy Commission considered five candidates for the 16th Judicial district's open bench created by the retirement of David Bragg on Jan. 1, 2021. After holding a public hearing and conducting public interviews, the Commission narrowed the selection to three individuals for Lee's consideration. Those Rutherford County attorneys were Trevor Lynch, John "Jack" G. Mitchell III and Turner.

The following Tennesseans were also appointed:

Judge Jill Ayers: Court of Criminal Appeals, Middle District (subject to confirmation by the General Assembly)
Christopher Heagerty : 6th Judicial District Chancery Court
Jerome Melson: 6th Judicial District Circuit Court
Rebecca Lee: 4th Judicial District Public Defender
