MURFREESBORO – On Saturday, April 6, the Rutherford County Democratic Party elected six new officers to lead the Party into the 2020 election cycle.

More than 100 Democrats from across Rutherford County gathered at Patterson Park Community Center to elect the officers and 24 Executive Committee members. Several of those elected were former candidates for office in the 2018 election cycle, including Mariah Phillips, who ran for U.S. Congress against Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Jasper. Phillips received 44 percent of the vote in Rutherford County.

Phillips said she was interested in party leadership after the election.

"The mood is shifting in Tennessee. We won several precincts in Rutherford County, and I want to continue on the momentum that our campaign built. I will use my experience to help get Democrats elected to keep fighting for Tennessee’s working families," she said.

A complete list of officers is as follows: Mariah Phillips (Chair), David Settles (Vice Chair), Michael White (Second Vice Chair), Chase Hartsook (Recording Secretary), Deborah Johnson (Corresponding Secretary), and Cathy Watts (Treasurer).

"There is so much potential for success in 2020 and it starts today. I want to give a special thank you to everyone who has given me so much support over the last two years. Democrats win when we all work together! I am looking forward to working with you all (the Executive Committee)," Outgoing Party Chairman Matt Ferry said.

The Executive Committee will hold a training session on April 20 at Bradley Museum. Their next event will be a social gathering, True Blue Tuesday, on May 7 at 219 Mixed Cuisine on Broad Street from 7-9pm. The theme of May’s True Blue Tuesday is "Get to Know Your EC Member." All meetings of the Rutherford County Democratic Party are open to the public.
