During the three-hour testing window on Saturday, April 18, 354 COVID-19 tests were performed at the Rutherford County Health Department.
Lines of cars wrapped around downtown even with police directing traffic.
"Tennesseans across the state heeded the call of 'when in doubt, get a test' and we believe these efforts will be an important part of our overall strategy to reboot Tennessee's economy,” Lee said in a press release. "While demand exceeded original projections, our Unified-Command group adapted quickly this weekend so that individuals who needed tests could receive them.”
Saturday turnout was the largest with more than 6,500 samples taken from the 11,000 people who showed up at 22 sites across the state.
It's almost as if everyone are still worried about the deadly virus.
That is, everyone except a chosen few, who despite the presumably middling grades they got in high school science, believe they alone know the truth about COVID-19. How conceded can you get?
That's right, Heather Dawbarn and Tammy Sharp in your eagle cosplay outfit, you two have cracked the COVID code and discovered that one of the world's richest men, who is known for his medical philanthropy, wants to use a vaccine to implant a tracking device in your nose.
Sure that makes sense. (Insert exaggerated eye-roll GIF here.)
What's more likely? Bill Gates is really a Bond-style villain or Google or Facebook will just use the mobile phone that's in your pocket to track you. I'm going with Google and Facebook because they already do it.
I don't know who looked like a bigger fool. Rutherford County School Board Member Sharp in her eagle jammies or the Murfreesboro man who said he was protesting because he missed free refills at restaurants and was tired of getting two iced teas in the drive-thru.
Thanks to these folks (not scientists, god forbid) and the corporate interests (see here) that back them Gov. Bill Lee announced he is going allow his stay-at-home order to expire at the end of April.
In reality, it doesn't really matter what Lee does or says. Two-thirds of the population are more worried about opening too early and hastening the spread of the virus than the impact to the economy. Most people were socially distancing and self-isolating before Lee got off the pot and did something about it.
So, those who are worried about it will continue to stay safely at home and those who aren't will go out and spread it amongst themselves. Then we'll have another spike in infections and deaths.
And perhaps fewer protestors next time around.
This is the new normal.
If you didn't make it on Saturday, expanded testing will continue for the next two weekends, April 25-26 and May 2-3. In addition to drive-through sites, all rural county health departments across the state offer free COVID-19 testing 5 days a week.
