"Project Feed" — as it is known — provides too powerful of an impact for local families to keep La Vergne Middle School from hosting its annual free community Thanksgiving meal for an 11th consecutive year.

Yet the school will begin its second decade with a modified version of what it has offered in years past.

"We are excited to offer hot meals," said LaVergne Middle Principal Dr. Cary Holman, who will be following strict COVID-19 protocols. "All meals will be carryout."

This year’s meal pickup will take place Nov. 24 from 4-6 p.m., and as always, it is free and open to the public.

Community members will come through the serving line to get their carryout meals while practicing social distancing guidelines.

Holman sees the offering as a powerful way of bringing together the students and faculty at La Vergne Middle with the entire community it serves.

All the food comes from a canned food drive held in advance along with partnerships with Walmart, Kroger, Save a Lot and Publix as well as donations from banks, churches and other local businesses.

Holman works with students and uses the opportunity to teach them and faculty members how to properly prepare turkeys.
