The St. Clair Senior Center has been awarded the Tennessee Federation for Aging (TFA) “Innovation Award.” The award was presented during the TFA Conference Award Luncheon, Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Music Road Hotel & Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
“We are pleased to receive the Innovation Award for improving the lives of older adults in our community,” said St. Clair Street Senior Center Director Connie Rigsby. “Our dedicated staff is proud of the new services and programs implemented as part of the remodeling of the Senior Center, which reopened in July 2017 following an eight-month renovation.”
“The entire City, Senior Center Commission and staff, along with supporters who participating in the renovation and new programming, can take pride in this recognition,” added Rigsby.
The St. Clair Street Senior Center was recognized for meeting all four categories of the TFA Award:
1) Recognized by the City for funding the project
2) Established new partnerships while under renovation
3) new and innovative programming changes made by the Senior Center Commission and
4) continuing to serve Rutherford County’s growing senior population serving 891 new participants.
The St. Clair Street Senior Center, located at 325 Saint Clair Street, received a $2.3 million facelift that included a new HVAC system, interior lighting, new furniture, exercise center and a networking lounge. The Senior Center also revamped programming with new media equipment utilizing training on using smartphones, tablets, laptops and social media.
In addition, a new rewards program, Sign-Up Show UP, gives seniors a chance to win promotional items for attending events, an idea developed to increase participation. The Grand Reopening of the Senior Center was held July 28.
The Tennessee Federation for the Aging, Inc. (TFA) was organized in 1968 and incorporated in 1969 to secure funding for senior citizens programs and services and to serve as an advocacy group for seniors. Over the years, TFA has coordinated with various local, district and statewide organizations to provide service training, senior educational workshops, and advocacy to align efforts to improve the overall quality of life for older Tennesseans.
