Read To Succeed received 1,613 gently used books Wednesday from Siegel Elementary teacher Angela Pope’s student book drive.

The book drive took place between Nov. 16 and Dec. 10 by Pope’s students. Over the course of the book drive, students went out into the community in search of used books to donate to Read To Succeed.

“The students had a lot of fun with the book drive and helping Read To Succeed,” said Pope, “The effort from them is extraordinary, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

One student remarked that reading and writing is one of her favorite activities and that she is happy to share her hobby with more people. Another student explained that he enjoyed the book drive since charitable donations have been a long-standing family tradition.

The books will go toward Read To Succeed’s family literacy programs that help pre-K through high school students connect with their peers and learn more about the world and themselves through diverse readings. Additionally, Read To Succeed will distribute the donated books to Rutherford County students and families in need as part of the organization’s community events.

“We strive to bring literacy to families in need. To see Ms. Pope’s students want to help us in that mission is heartwarming and very moving,” said Katie Cundy, Read To Succeed family literacy coordinator.

Read To Succeed improves lives in Rutherford County and promotes literacy with free programs and resources for children and adults. Read To Succeed supports its mission by fostering partnerships with providers, educators, community helpers and business owners, creating events and programming to promote literacy.
