Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department was called to the Kroger at 2050 Lascassas Pike around 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, March 20 for a possible hazardous materials release, according to a press release.

The first arriving crews on scene worked with Kroger management to safely evacuate the building of employees and customers who remained inside.

Twelve people on site were complaining of shortness of breath, nausea, headaches, and irritated throat and eyes. Those 12 were evaluated by Rutherford County EMS, but refused any type of treatment or transport.

At least three other people who had already left the store were complaining of the same symptoms, called EMS for assistance, and also refused treatment or transport. All patients reported their symptoms improving with time.

MFRD’s Hazardous Materials Response Team entered the building with air monitors and surveyed all areas of the store, but found nothing.

It is unclear at this time what could have caused the incident. However, Battalion Chief Joe Bell said they will likely review the in-store camera footage to rule out any foul play.

Kroger has been cleared to reopen for business. More information on the incident will be released as it becomes available.
