New numbers show a drop in crime from 2017 to 2019 in La Vergne of nearly 6 percent overall, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's annual report.
A total of 2,924 crimes were reported in 2017, 2,630 were reported in 2018 and 2,392 were reported in 2019. That's more than 500 fewer reported crimes in just two years.
"I'm proud of our men and women who serve every day," Chief Mike Walker said. "They go above and beyond to keep the citizens safe."
Crimes against persons are down 22 percent, or 173 reported cases, from 2017 to 2019. Crimes against property are also down nearly 21 percent, or 301 reported cases, between 2017 and 2019. Crimes against society was down 8.5 percent.
"This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the men and women at all levels of La Vergne Police," said Mayor Jason Cole. "Day after day they strive to make this community safe for our residents and those visiting our community."
Walker emphasized that theft from motor vehicles hasn't improved. There were 136 reported cases in 2017, 142 in 2018 and 134 in 2019.
"This is why we push for folks to use the 9PM Routine," Walker said. "It's an easy way to remind yourself to lock up your stuff and not become an easy victim."
The 9PM Routine is a nationwide effort to remind people every night at 9 p.m. to lock up property, turn on lights and bring valuables in to reduce the likelihood of falling victim to property crimes.
